Margaret congratulates local press for banning advertisements that encourage sex trafficking
Margaret has today congratulated the Johnston Press Plc for saying it would stop advertisements in papers that promote “adult entertainment” establishments.
Margaret, who sits on the Home Affairs Select Committee, has heard evidence that human trafficking for the sex trade is encouraged by “adult entertainment” establishments, many of which place advertisements in local papers. She wrote to local newspapers to ask if they would impose a ban on such advertisements.
Margaret said:
“I am delighted that the Johnston Press Plc, who own the Herald and Post, the Luton News, and The Dunstable Gazette, have had a policy in force for some time regarding sex adverts.
“I congratulate the Johnston Press Plc group. They have written to me saying that not only do they ban sex ads but that they also impose restrictions on the wording of advertisements to ensure the nature of the business is clear and that the nationality of the staff is not mentioned. I hope others will follow this enlightened lead.”
